Gatsby Night at Sullivan's Steakhouse

Sneed received an e-mail from the manager of Sullivan's. Due to the success of the release of the movie "The Great Gatsby", the restaurant was promoting a Gatsby night and wanted some cars to place out front. This was a last minute request so we, along with John and Georgia, agreed to come. Not necessarily Gatsby-esque cars, the vehicles were positioned so as to be seen by those driving by. We enjoyed steak dinners while the cars got appreciated by the patrons.

Webb Celebration and Sightseeing

We had some time before the celebration so we drove down to Imperial Beach where we came across this statue along the beach. It's been dubbed “The Spirit of Imperial Beach,” and honors the birthplace of lifeguards and its surfing history. Following the shoreline we crossed over to Coronado where the famous Hotel del Coronado graces the island. A totally wooden structure, I believe it's the oldest wooden hotel still in existence.

Ivonne and Robb live on Coronado Island. Robb was attached to the Naval Base there. Here's the lovely couple cutting a cake that Ivonne made for each table. Robb drove their lovely Bentley to church.

After the reception, we drove around the island and went to Cabrillo National Monument. Cabrillo stepped into history as the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States. We got there at 455pm and the park closed at 5. Quite a disappointment as it was still broad daylight.

 

This National War Cemetery was outside the monument area. It was quite sobering seeing row upon row of the white crosses standing at attention. Quite serendipitously, I found a memorial marker for Walter (Wally) Shirra, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and the only person to fly in all of America's first three space programs (Mercury, Gemini and Apollo).

A Special Occasion trip to San Diego/Coronado CA

 

         When we got home from the meet in San Antonio, this invitation was in the mail waiting for us. Of course, we RSVP'd immediately feeling honored to celebrate Rob and Ivonne Webb's 50th Anniversary with their family and friends. Our association is through the RROC.

We stayed at the Hacienda in Old Town San Diego.

RROC Annual Meet, San Antonio April 8-13

All the cars were in a police-escorted parade to the Alamo. Werner and Eva Hacker from Sao Paolo, Brazil rode with us.

 

Sneed and I visited the Alamo on our honeymoon in 1972. At that time we took a photo on some chairs in this very spot. The chairs have been replaced by the bench.

The theme of the meet was Fiesta San Antonio. The Rey (King) welcomed us and led us in the Viva Fiesta cheer.



FL member and good friend, Judy Alden. Cypress received 2 awards. The Harding-Rolls Award is for the most miles driven since the previous annual meet - Louisville. 30,000 miles from June 23, 2012 to April 13, 2013. The Edgar Eaton award was for the Best of Prior Best in Show, Touring.(whew)

Day Thirteen :: Last Photos of the Visit

Sniff, sniff, we leave bright and early (well not bright as there is no sunlight at 5am) tomorrow morning, so we tried to get a photo with the boys before we left.

Day Twelve :: Funtimes and a Killer Scrabble Game

Annemarie and I always play at least one game of Scrabble. I took an early lead by Bingo-ing with a blank on the first play and soon afterwards got the other blank and Bingo-ed with it as well. Only after the game was finished did Annemarie tell me that on the first play I forgot to tally the double word score. I had scored it as a double letter thus making my 6 one pointers count as 7 points. Duh!

Day Eleven :: Two (parks) in One (day)

Annemarie and Blake went to a meeting, so Burke and I went to the park (again). So much fun to be had there. Today there were a lot of other children also. In the afternoon, we went to Stevens Park, a 10 minute ride from home, and met with lots of other children there. Burke had fun on the playground while Blake had an afternoon 'snack'.
